🎧 Learn about AI by listening: audiobooks and e-books for beginners

Not everyone learns best by reading on a screen. An audiobook comes along on walks, in the car and during chores – and there are books about AI for every level.

Why listen to books about AI?

AI is changing work, news and daily life quickly, and many people want to understand the basics without technical jargon. A book gives a broader picture than individual news stories or social posts: it explains where AI came from, how it works and what it could mean in the future. As an audiobook you can listen on a morning walk, on the commute or while doing the dishes. This page complements our guides, such as What is AI? and Learning and hobbies.

What kinds of books should you look for?

We don't list individual titles here, because catalogues change and new books appear all the time. Instead, here are the topics worth searching for. Good search terms include “artificial intelligence”, “AI”, “machine learning” and “algorithms”, or the Finnish “tekoäly”.

  • Popular introductions: books that explain the basics of AI in everyday language. The best starting point if the topic is new to you.
  • AI and work: how AI is changing jobs, management and entrepreneurship. Especially useful for business owners and managers.
  • Practical guides: books that teach you to use AI tools and write good instructions, known as prompts. A recent edition matters most here.
  • Ethics and society: privacy, bias, disinformation, copyright and AI regulation. These help you form your own view.
  • History and stories: non-fiction about the development of AI and computing, and the companies and researchers behind it.
  • Science fiction: novels that explore the relationship between machines and people. An entertaining way to raise big questions.
Tip: Check the publication year. Books about practical AI tools date quickly, so choose the newest one you can find. Books on fundamentals and history stay relevant for longer.

BookBeat, Storytel and Nextory

The most popular audiobook services in Finland are BookBeat, Storytel and Nextory. All offer a wide range of audiobooks and e-books in Finnish, English and other languages, and work as phone apps. The differences lie mainly in pricing, the number of listening hours and the focus of their catalogues. Nextory also includes magazines. The services often offer new customers a free trial, though length and terms vary. A good way to choose is to search each service for a few topics that interest you and see which catalogue suits you best.

Watch out: A free trial usually turns into a paid subscription automatically. Put the end date in your calendar and cancel in time if you don't want to continue. We may earn a small commission on sign-ups made through our links.

Use AI to support your learning

Listening works best when you process what you've learned afterwards. AI is excellent for this.

ChatGPT explains and quizzes you

If a book mentioned a term you didn't understand, ask ChatGPT: “Explain simply what machine learning means and give an everyday example.” You can also ask it to make you a short quiz on the topic. You'll find more terms in our glossary.

I listened to a book about how AI affects working life. Ask me five questions on the topic, one at a time, and after each answer tell me what I got right and what I could think about further.

NotebookLM makes your own material listenable

NotebookLM works the other way round: you upload your own notes, articles or PDFs and it turns them into a podcast-style audio overview. That way you can listen to course material or workplace guidelines in summarised form. The quality of Finnish overviews varies, so check important points against the original source.

Listening also suits people with poor eyesight

Audiobooks are an excellent option if reading has become tiring because of eyesight or concentration. The apps usually let you adjust the reading speed, set a sleep timer and pick up where you left off, even on another device. Try slowing down or speeding up the narrator until listening feels natural.

A three-week listening plan

  • Week 1: one popular introduction to AI.
  • Week 2: a book about AI in your field or in working life.
  • Week 3: a book on ethics or society – alongside working through your own questions with ChatGPT.
