Visit: Google Lens ↗

Google Lens is a camera-based tool that recognises what's in a picture. Point your camera at a foreign sign, menu or package and Lens shows the translation right on top of the image. It can also identify plants, animals, landmarks and products, and copy text from paper to your phone. Lens is in the Google app, Google Photos and the camera of many Android phones, and on iPhone through the Google app. Recognition isn't always right, so never identify mushrooms, for example, with an app alone.

Who it is for: Travellers, curious minds and anyone facing foreign-language text.

Best for: Translation, Finding information, Seeing and accessibility, On my phone

👍 Pros

  • Translates text straight from the camera view
  • Identifies plants, products and places
  • Free and easy

⚠️ Keep in mind

  • Recognition can be wrong
  • Images are processed on Google's servers
  • Not for safety-critical uses like identifying mushrooms
