Free is enough for most people

Many people assume AI costs money. In reality, an ordinary user can get by for a long time on free versions alone. They usually have usage limits, such as a certain number of messages or images a day, and the newest features reach paying customers first. For everyday tasks like writing an email, translating a text or coming up with a recipe, the free version is more than enough. Here are the tools that give you the most without costing anything.

For writing and asking questions

ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot are all free AI assistants that understand Finnish well. You can ask them for help with letters, ask for advice, brainstorm gift ideas or have them explain something complicated simply. Copilot is already on Windows PCs and Gemini on many Android phones, so you don't even need to install them.

For studying and long texts

NotebookLM is Google's free tool where you upload your own files, such as PDF manuals or articles, and ask questions about them. It answers with references to your sources and can even turn the material into an audio overview you can listen to. It's great for hobbies, study, or going through papers for a housing company meeting.

For translation and travel

DeepL translates Finnish very naturally, and the free version handles short and medium-length texts. Google Translate is completely free and works offline once you've downloaded a language pack. Google Lens translates signs and menus straight through your phone camera. Read more in our guide to translation and travel.

For images and video

The free version of Canva lets you make social posts, invitations and flyers from ready-made templates, with some AI features included. CapCut is a free video editor that creates automatic captions and helps with short videos. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot can also create a limited number of images for free.

For accessibility

Be My Eyes is a completely free app for blind and low-vision people. It describes what the camera sees out loud and reads things like letters and package labels. You can also call a volunteer helper through the app.

Tip: Sign up to services with the same email address and keep your passwords somewhere safe. Many services also let you sign in with a Google or Microsoft account, which means fewer passwords to remember.

What does free cost you?

Free services fund themselves in different ways. Some hope you'll upgrade later, and some may use your conversations to develop their AI. So check the settings to see whether you can opt out of your data being used. The basic rule is simple: don't type anything into a free service that you wouldn't want a stranger to read, such as your ID number, health details or customer data.

Watch out: App stores are full of โ€œfreeโ€ AI apps that are really expensive subscriptions or copies of well-known services. Always download the app under the official developer's name; for example, ChatGPT is made by OpenAI. More on scams in our guide to AI scams.

When is paying worth it?

Consider a paid version only when you use a tool almost every day and keep hitting the limit, or when you need a feature the free version lacks. Most subscriptions cost around โ‚ฌ10โ€“20 a month, and prices change often. You can usually cancel at any time, so trying it for one month is a small risk. But always start with the free version, so you know what you're buying.

Get started today

Pick one assistant and one other tool that fits your daily life. Travelling soon? Download Google Translate and try the camera translation at home first. Write lots of messages? Ask ChatGPT or Gemini to make an email sound more polite. Doing newsletters for a club? Try a ready-made Canva template. Once one tool feels familiar, it's easy to add the next. You'll find the first steps in our guide Getting started with AI.
